There Is No Secret Sauce

There is no secret sauce when it comes to maneuvering the online world.

When I was hand-picked to be one of six people to kick-start the first multimedia studio for ABC Studios, it was an exciting time. Creating content for online platforms was brand new to our division. We sat in high level rooms with Facebook, Hulu, Twitter, and others always hoping to discover the secret sauce.

Here is what I learned from sitting in countless rooms, eager to discover the secret sauce:

  • The online world is forever changing. Therefore, you can’t pin it down.
  • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Facebook will always be making changes to the platform. Twitter might be around for the next 20 years, or it might not. LinkedIn might get bought by a larger corporation that has other plans for the site, or it might not.
  • Another platform will come along and claim it is the next big thing, and then a year later go out of business because it ran out of funding.
  • There are absolutely no guarantees that one formula is going to work, so there is absolutely no secret sauce.

What I learned is that I loved that the online world because it is unpredictable just like the Wild, Wild West. I learned to stop looking for the secret sauce and embrace the forever changing online world.
